When Friends Meet
10 natural pictures per week,
and here is No.139.
The photographs in this article show the habitats of mammals,
birds and amphibians living in peaceful harmony with one another in their natural habitats,
here in Mountains of Southwest China.
Images depict the amazing biodiversity,
and shows that if different animal species can live harmoniously with each other,
so can be harmonious.
Cervus nippon & Elaphodus cephalophus
(Sika Deer & Tufted Deer)
F/4, 300mm, 1/1000s, ISO640
These two deer give an example of how species can be similar yet very distinct, especially when they have adapted to the same habitat. The photographer captured these deer cousins living together in harmony.
Vulpes ferrilata & Procapra picticaudata
(Tibetan Fox & Goa)
F/5.6, 500mm, 1/3200s, ISO400
Despite one being predator and the other more commonly prey, the Goa and the Tibetan fox can still be captured living together in moments of harmony.
Procapra picticaudata & Bubo bubo
(Goa & Eurasian Eagle-owl)
F/7.1, 400mm, 1/200s, ISO1000
The Goa lives on the Tibetan plateau which is why it also goes by the name of Tibetan Gazelle. Living with these Goa's is the Eurasian Eagle-owl which has a typical wingspan of up to 188cm (~6ft).
Athene noctua & Lepus oiostolus
(Little Owl & Woolly Hare)
F/6.3, 400mm, 1/100s, ISO200
These two species both prefer warm temperatures which is why they can be found together in western China. Although you can now find little owls in the UK and New Zealand. Little owls often like to nest in rabbit burrows for warmth and comfort. The perspective of this photography shows the difference in sizes.
Oenanthe isabellina & Mustela altaica
(Isabelline Wheatear & Mountain Weasel)
F/5.6, 400mm, 1/400s, ISO100
Curiosity can be seen in many different species from the mountains of South West China. Although sharing no physical similarities, the staring eyes of this weasel and wheatear give them the same demeanour.
Chrysolophus pictus & Muntiacus reevesi
(Golden Pheasant & Reeves's Muntjac)
F/5.6, 500mm, 1/800s, ISO800
Can you spot the golden pheasant above this muntjac? Having inhabited the land for millions of years, the muntjac population are well adapted to live happily and peacefully with all their neighbours in the Chinese wilderness.
Crossoptilon auritum & Marmota himalayana
(Blue-eared Pheasant & Himalayan Marmot)
F/13, 420mm, 1/400s, ISO6400
Although we can not see the Himalayan marmot in this photo, we know members of the species are likely in the surrounding area, as we can see several entrances to their burrow home.
Charadrius placidus, Tringa hypoleucos & Anas platyrhynchos
(Long-billed Plover, Common Sandpiper & Mallard)
F/5.6, 400mm, 1/640s, ISO1250
This image shows three species residing in the lake, the long-billed plovers rest as the common sandpiper and mallard swim by together.
Psittacula alexandri & Psittacula roseata
(Red-breasted Parakeet & Blossom-headed Parakeet)
F/6.3, 840mm, 1/1000s, ISO640
Distinguished only by a few differences in the colours of their plumage, it is clear how closely related these two species of parakeet are. This perhaps explains why the birds fly comfortably side by side through the clear sky.
Rhacophorus omeimontis & Petaurista alborufus
(Omei Treefrog & Red and White Giant Flying Squirrel)
F/5.6, 400mm, 1/250s, ISO6400
If you can move you gaze away from bright eyes of this giant flying squirrel, you might be able to spot the Omei tree frog perched on the right. Unlike the red coat of his neighbour, the green colouring of the treefrog blends in well with their surroundings.
